Over the past five years, I have visited China on several occasions. My recent trips have been very different from an earlier trip, back in 1990. Photography as a leisure or hobby is a fairly new thing in China. Not that long ago it was rare the Chinese had to use a portrait studio if they wanted to have pictures taken. Not anymore: the number of people using cameras on the street is just mind-boggling. Cell phone cameras, digital point-and-shoots and professional DSLRs are everywhere.

I admit it: I spend an inappropriate amount of time clicking through Tumblr sites. Although I justify it by telling myself it is, after all, photography, that I am looking at, my critical vocabulary has been reduced to a series of snap judgments: “fantastic,”‘”nice,” “been done,” and “crap.” I’ve lost the ability to look at and think deeply about photography.
