Select works from Malcolm, Clare Samuel's ongoing project—a series of photography and video installation work exploring intimacy, loss, and madness.
"The project explores my relationship with my father while he lived with a schizophrenia diagnosis and repeated medical ‘non-compliance’ until after his death in 2018. Malcolm—as my brother and I called him from a young age—died at 58 after heart surgery complications. Shell I (the suit he wore to my wedding) photographed while clearing out his flat. Shell II (abalone ashtray) is an item found at that time and photographed later. How amazingly unlikely is your birth includes image and audio documentation of the funeral, emptying his flat, medical body scans belonging to both my father and myself, his heartbeat and me reading several of his documents."
