About the Exhibition: 

Raised on Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, General spent most of her adulthood living in urban environments but now feels a strong pull to return back to her home territory where her recollections of childhood and history reside. By photographing herself with her childhood items in the significant places of childhood, General presents a meditation on personal and collective memories in relation to identifying reserve land as ‘home.’ Present Memory traces the connections between place and history, between the lived, imagined and constructed.  

 

Artist Biography: 

Melissa General is Oneida from the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. She studied photography at the Ontario College of Art and Design and completed her MFA at York University. Concepts involving memory, identity construction, relationship to land, and her Indigenous heritage are a focus in her practice.
