Opening Reception:

About the Exhibition:

Silvery-grey images where the subject blends into the background and the background is almost indistinguishable from the paper itself, sometimes covered with chemical burns, often times clean and shimmering, these are the results that artist Anthony Gerace achieved when printing a new series of portraits on thirty-year-old gelatin silver photo paper. Gerace’s description of these images as unique, nostalgic, and fleeting, brings to mind the passing of an analogue photographic era. These images were printed in Gallery 44’s black and white wet darkroom, which is the last publically accessible darkroom in the city.

Artist Biography:

Anthony Gerace is the 2012 winner of the Verant Richards, which honours the life of Gallery 44 founding member Verant Richards, and is awarded annually to a graduating photography student of the Ontario College of Art and Design who demonstrates great promise and commitment to becoming a photo-based artist. Gerace trained as a graphic designer but works equally in an art practice based in photography, collage, and installation. He has exhibited in Canada, England, Sweden and Germany. He lives and works in London.
