Simon Glass: YAHWEH!
Essays by Terry Costantino, Scott McLeod, poetry by Paul Celan

Simon Glass, Golem II , 1995)

YAHWEH!
is a moving body of work by Toronto artist Simon Glass, based in his exploration of Jewish theology, culture and history. Using original photographs as well as archival photographs from the Holocaust, Glass juxtaposes images with Hebrew letters, extending and deepening his quest for cultural and personal meaning. YAHWEH! features four distinct yet related suites of prints: Book of Formation, a series of diptychs comprised of sepia-toned photographs of human skin, presented in the shape of Hebrew letters and overlaid with gold leaf; Golem I and II, blue-toned portraits of children's faces overlaid with gold Hebrew letters, spelling he work "truth"; Yahweh, four black - white photographs of mounds of corpses superimposed with the letters which spell the unutterable name of God, mounted in a vertical column and Merciful and Gracious, nine black-and-white photographs comprised of gold Hebrew letters overlaying photographs of concentration camp inmates.
