Jim Verburg

A six-week emerging artist residency was awarded to Montreal-based artist Jim Verburg. Verburg was in residence at the Gallery from May to July, wherein he produced work to be included in Gallery 44’s annual PROOF exhibition.

Verburg used his time during the residency to look at new methods of exploring his ongoing investigation of relationships. Using motion sequences, photographs, photocopies, screen prints and drawings, Verburg explored how intimate and emotional matters can be portrayed and reinterpreted though landscape, pattern, repetition, colour and form. The resulting piece was a multi-media introspective visual metaphor connecting the personal, symbolic, and ephemeral, using form, medium and material.

Jim Verburg's work has been exhibited, screened and published nationally and internationally. His film work has won numerous awards and was nominated for the Iris Prize in the UK. The past year he completed a residency at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), as well as a solo exhibition at Widmer + Theodoridis Contemporary Gallery in Zurich. He was recently featured by Widmer + Theodoridis at the HOT ART Fair 2009 in Basel, Switzerland.
