WHO WE ARE

For over 35 years, Gallery 44 has been a leading artist-run centre, providing much needed support to Canadian artists. Every contribution to Gallery 44 has an immediate impact, helping us to sustain accessible and meaningful programming.

Gallery 44 is centered on three programming areas:

  • We offer affordable production facilities to over 400 artist members, including darkrooms and digital printing, ensuring that artists working across diverse media have an accessible space to experiment and develop their photo-based practices.
  • Providing a similarly accessible gallery space, G44 presents dynamic exhibitions that reflect a range of contemporary issues and visual forms. As a mentor-focused institution, rather than a curator-focused one, we maintain a collaborative approach in which artists play a central and active role in shaping programming and supporting one another’s artistic development. G44 dedicates significant portions of our programming calendar each year to focusing on emerging artists. Longstanding programs, such as Proof and Cameralinks, provide a place for artists at the cusp of their own explorations into seeing to widen the dialogue around contemporary photography.
  • An equally important part of our mandate is to provide production, exhibition, mentorship and scholarship opportunities to youth throughout the GTA. Gallery 44’s OUTREACH program, for example, offers photography workshops to youth from underserved communities. This unique program inspires youth to develop positive methods of sharing their stories and to initiate critical explorations into art-viewing and art-making. As one of the only artist-run centres in Canada providing ongoing, hands-on arts education to youth, our award-winning education programs encourage greater visual literacy, while fostering a new generation of artists.

WHERE WE ARE GOING

Although we are indebted to our long history as an artist-run centre, we are also very much engaged in looking forward and thinking about what’s next. Gallery 44 is working on expanding our residency program, which provides local and international artists and curators with the opportunity to work in our facilities, develop in-depth research and curatorial projects, explore new ways of making, and exhibit new works. Another current important priority is further developing our OUTREACH program to include new digital workshops and to expand our reach into new communities. We are committed to growing our programs and partnerships, and furthering the ways we support artists in every stage of their careers.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

We need your help to continue to thrive and grow. As a registered charity, Gallery 44 depends on public donations. Your donation assists us with: supporting artistic production through our affordable facilities; programming for youth; and presenting innovative publications, talks, events, and exhibitions.

At any level of giving, your contribution truly makes a difference.

ABOUT YOUR DONATION

By contributing to Gallery 44, you are directly supporting local and international artists by providing meaningful opportunities to develop their practices through exhibitions, public programs, workshops and access to digital and analogue facilities.

Your donation matters. Here’s how:

Donations in any amount provide the needed resources to strengthen our vision of exhibiting innovative and challenging contemporary photography.

$100 donation assists us in keeping Gallery 44's production facilities, including one of Toronto's only publicly accessible wet darkrooms, open for one day.

$500 donation provides a photography workshop for 30 students and assists us in providing arts education throughout the GTA.

$1,000 donation allows us to provide mentorship and hands-on photo experience to youth from underserved communities through our OUTREACH program.

$5,000 donation champions an exhibition of contemporary lens-based media, turning the gallery over to emerging and established artists’ unique explorations into the photographic image. This level of giving can be allocated towards artist fees, a print catalogue and public programs to accompany the exhibition.

Gallery 44 is able to provide tax receipts for donations made directly to the gallery in the amount of $50 and over. If you donate through Gallery 44’s Canada Helps page, you will automatically receive a tax receipt for any donation amount.

MONTHLY GIVING

Monthly Giving is an easy way to provide ongoing support throughout the year without having to write cheques or respond to online campaigns. Your donation is directed towards our core activities, including exhibitions, public programs and education initiatives targeted towards youth from underserved communities.

Monthly donations can be arranged in any amount through Canada Helps. Your donation will be automatically processed through your credit card and you can change the details of your monthly gift at any time.

A monthly donation of $25 supports a public talk by our exhibiting artists and ensures that we contribute to broadening the dialogue about contemporary art.

PLANNED GIVING

Leaving a planned gift, also known as a legacy gift, is an excellent way to ensure the future of Gallery 44 while thinking about yours. There are several categories of planned giving. Gallery 44 is able to receive planned gifts in the following ways:

Bequests:

A bequest in your Will allows you to plan ahead while benefiting from tax advantages and deepening your commitment to Gallery 44.

All it takes is a simple clause in your Will to leave a gift to Gallery 44. Please note that Wills can be complex documents and should be drafted with the assistance of legal counsel. The wording of a bequest, if not crafted properly, can become difficult to administer. Your legal advisor will be able to assist with the proper wording of your bequest wishes.

Securities:

Since the federal government eliminated the capital gains tax on gifts of publicly traded securities, giving a gift of stock is a convenient and tax effective way to support Gallery 44. Securities donations can even be made directly through Gallery 44’s Canada Helps page.
