Photofinishing 101 (Course)
In this comprehensive course, participants will learn the intricacies of taking their images from the digital space, into a finalized piece ready for professional presentation. Taught over the course of three consecutive weeks, this series of hands-on workshops culminates in a holistic understanding of the tools and techniques required to prepare work for exhibition.
Participants will leave the course with a framed work. All materials and printing will be provided.
PLEASE READ: In Eventbrite only register for the January 27, 2024 event date, this will confirm your registration for all 3 workshops in the course (Jan 27, Feb 3, Feb 10). Join G44's Digital Printing Technician, Miora Wong, for a hands-on workshop designed to elevate your understanding of the various intricacies of bringing digital images to life.
This printing workshop isn't just about the basics—it's a comprehensive exploration of the entire process. Throughout the workshop participants will discover the use of tools like Calibrite to seamlessly integrate colour accuracy into their workflow, ensuring the highest quality output; explore the impact of different paper types on print quality, enhancing their understanding of how these details influence the final output; submit an online order form; create and review test prints; cut prints to size; handle the final print with care and precision, gaining insights into techniques for display and preservation.
Each participant should bring their laptop if available, and a high-resolution image for printing. Participants will leave with prints (8x10, 11x14), serving as tangible reminders of the skills and knowledge gained, ready to be explored further in the upcoming workshops.

Navigate options for presenting your photography from traditional framing to contemporary installations. This workshop will begin with discussion and examples of a vast variety of presentation options, including confidently navigating framing options and ordering the right parts. Together we will determine what works best for your work; balancing aesthetics, budget and archival considerations.
All participants will also have the opportunity to dry mount one of their prints for framing. A valuable skill that can save you a lot of cash when preparing for an exhibition.

NEW! Photofinishing 101: Matting & Framing
February 10, 12-3PM
Marco Buonocore
This workshop will offer an introduction to matting and framing photographs. We will discuss choosing the right size and colour of window mat, cutting mat board, assembling your matted print, and installing it in your picture frame. We'll also cover materials such as hanging hardware, adhesives, and glazing. This workshop will center around using the equipment in the Gallery 44 production facilities.
Each participant will leave with 1 framed work and the skills necessary to mat and frame their own works in the future.

Miora Wong is a digital-based multidisciplinary artist and photographer. She graduated with Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography in 2019 from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson University). She likes to dabble in all fields and genres of photography, but mainly focuses on still life photography and assisting in any production and post-production practices.
Darren Rigo (he/him) is a Toronto-based artist, photographer and educator with a decade of experience mounting exhibitions, visiting residencies and looking carefully at photographs.
Marco Buonocore is a Hamilton based photographer and printer whose work revolves around the analog darkroom and exploring silver gelatin materials and technology. He teaches darkroom photography and works as a printer for artists, museums, and archives.
